How We Build a Custom Mens Hoodie — Hood, Zip, Pocket, Rib, Seam

Hood, drawcord, pocket, zip, and rib — the wash-stress points engineered and tested before bulk. Each component below carries its own pass standard: lined-hood build graded to the fit block, bartacked-and-patched eyelet, bartacked pocket-mouth corners, YKK/SBS zip tested to ASTM D2061, 2×2 spandex-spec’d rib, and AQL 2.5 inspection by our 8 lab techs.

Men's hoodie construction detail — hood, drawcord, pocket, zip, rib

Hood

2-panel or 3-panel build, double-layer self-fabric or jersey-lined, with hood height graded to the fit block.

Lined · graded to block — stands up, won’t collapse

Drawcord & Eyelet

Metal eyelet, bartacked and backed with a reinforcement patch — not punched-only. Flat, round, or no-eyelet tunnel; tipped cord ends.

Bartacked + patch — won’t pull out

Pocket

Kangaroo, split-kangaroo, zip-media, or hidden-phone pocket, bartacked at the pocket-mouth corners — the high-stress join that sags first.

Corner bartack — no sag or gape

Zip

YKK or SBS branded zips with a reinforced box-and-pin and an anti-snag storm-flap option on full-zip styles.

ASTM D2061 ≥ 500 cycles

Rib & Seam

2×2 or 1×1 rib with spandex spec’d for recovery; 4-needle flatlock or coverstitch on stress seams, bartacked at hood-to-body, pocket, and cuff joins.

AQL 2.5 / 98.5% — 8 lab-techs

French Terry, Mens Fleece, Tech Fleece and Sherpa — Hoodie Fabrics by Structure

Chosen by structure and hand-feel, not just weight — and held to the same weight and color tolerance on every reorder, whether you need a french terry hoodie manufacturer or a custom tech fleece hoodie manufacturer.

Decoration × fleece

Which of Our Six Decoration Methods Belongs on Which Fleece

All six print and embroidery methods run in-house and can be combined on one PO — but a napped fleece face and a smooth terry face do not take ink the same way. This is the pairing logic we apply before quoting your artwork.

MethodWorks best onCaution on fleeceUse it for
Flat embroideryAll five structures, incl. heavy brushed fleeceBacking required on loose knits to stop puckerChest marks, logos — the most fleece-tolerant method
3D embossedBrushed-back fleece, 280–360 GSMNeeds pile depth; flat on thin waffleTonal, debossed branding on heavy hoodies
Silicone printLoopback terry, tech fleeceHigh-build edges can crack over deep nap unless pre-pressedRaised rubberized logos, sleeve hits
Heat transferTech poly fleece, waffle-knitPress temperature can crush brushed pile — we shield itMulti-color art, small batches per colorway
DTGCotton-rich loopback terry, light shadesFibrillation on napped faces blurs detail; weak on darksPhotographic prints on light terry
SublimationTech poly fleece onlyNeeds polyester face — will not bond to cotton terryAll-over graphics on training hoodies

The nap problem in one sentence: a brushed face is a bed of raised fibre, so anything printed flat onto it is really printed onto fibre tips that move — which is why we pre-press the print zone, lift artwork onto embroidery or 3D emboss where the GSM allows, and wash-test the chosen pairing on your actual fabric before bulk. All six methods can share a single garment when the placement plan keeps each one on the face it tolerates.

Decoration: sublimation, DTG, silicone, 3D embossed, flat embroidery, and heat transfer — all six in-house and combinable on one PO, paired to your fleece per the matrix above — plus a woven label, neck print, hangtag, and packaging kit. Building a graphics-led drop rather than a fleece program? Our custom streetwear manufacturer page covers that route.

Order terms in brief: hoodie programs open at 100 pieces for a style across its sizes — for sampling fees, bulk scheduling, and payment structure, the FAQ carries the authoritative figures.

Sampling and product family: a sealed pre-production fit and construction sample is USD 45 per piece, returned in 5 working days on stock fabric or 12 working days on custom fabric — full workflow on small-batch sampling. Hoodies sit within our Athleisure product family alongside tees, jackets, and sweatpants; the six-method decoration deep-dive lives on print & embroidery.

Buyer questions

Custom Mens Hoodies Manufacturer — Questions Buyers Ask

Block grading, zips, fleece choice, and decoration pairing — the construction questions buyers raise on a hoodie tech-pack.

Do you grade a real men’s hoodie block across XS–3XL and Tall, or scale one block?

A real men’s block. We grade five men’s fit blocks — regular, athletic, relaxed, oversized, and tall — on men’s proportional increments, so the sleeve grows with the size and the tall block adds body and sleeve length without widening. Our 16 pattern-makers grade XS–3XL plus Tall in-house to a ±0.5 cm tolerance, and you sign off a sealed pre-production fit sample before any bulk is cut.

Will my hoodie reorder match the first run?

Yes. We hold fabric weight to ±5%, color to ΔE ≤1.5, and residual shrinkage to ≤3% after five home washes, and we spec the rib so the cuffs and hem keep their recovery. Where the run allows we cut a reorder from the same dye batch, so the second PO reads the same hand-feel and color as the first.

What zip and eyelet do you use, and are they tested?

YKK or SBS branded zips on full-zip, half-zip, and quarter-zip styles, set with a reinforced box-and-pin and tested to ASTM D2061 for 500-plus reciprocating cycles. Drawcord eyelets are metal, bartacked, and backed with a reinforcement patch — not punched-only — so they do not pull out of the hood.

Can you work from my tech-pack, or do you have your own hoodie blocks?

Both. Send a finished tech-pack and we cut-and-sew it as OEM, or start from our graded men’s hoodie blocks as ODM and change the fabric, color, pocket, hood, and label. If you have no tech-pack we pattern and grade one before sampling.

What happens between my brief and the first bulk hoodie?

Pattern (yours or ours) → fabric sourcing at your GSM → a sealed fit sample you sign → bulk inspected against that sample. Quantity thresholds, sampling cost, and scheduling are commercial policy rather than engineering, so we keep those figures in one place — the FAQ — and honour whatever is published there when you order.

Pullover or full-zip — which should I choose?

Pullover is the everyday and merch-volume build with a kangaroo or split pocket and a lined hood; full-zip adds a YKK separating zip and a split front pocket for a layering piece; half-zip and quarter-zip are pull-on layers for training crossover. Each closure is graded across the same five men’s fit blocks, so you can mix closures in one program.

Which fleece should I choose for my hoodie?

By use, not just weight: loopback French terry for everyday pullovers, brushed-back fleece for warm and oversized styles, tech poly fleece for wicking training hoodies, sherpa-lined for winter midlayers, and waffle-knit for transitional layering. We confirm the structure and GSM on your sample.

Can one hoodie carry more than one decoration method?

Yes, and it usually should — a typical build pairs flat embroidery at the chest with a silicone or heat-transfer hit on the sleeve, since all six of our methods run in-house and combine on a single PO. The constraint is the fleece face, not the artwork: napped structures push us toward embroidery and 3D emboss, smooth terry and tech fleece open up the printed methods. We map your placement plan against the decoration-by-fleece table above before quoting.
